Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a web site or a web page in search engines such as Google, Yahoo, & Bing, via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine.
The search engines utilize varying criteria in ranking Web pages in their search results and are subject to change. It is strongly recommended to use an experienced expert in the field.

The First, and Most Important, Step - Keyword/Phrase Research and Analysis

Keywords and phrases (terms) are simply the word(s) Web users enter in the “Search” field on any search engine to find information. The first phase of this step is to determine which terms are currently driving traffic to your site and those that are not. Secondly, a brainstorming session with your in-house personnel is extremely valuable in uncovering additional terms that may be effective.

Once the initial target list of terms is completed, extensive research is done to determine the frequency of each term’s usage by Web users. In addition, the frequency of related, or more specific, terms is researched as well as which terms your competitors are using. It is common for clients to start with an initial target list of 10-50 terms that winds up having hundreds of possible terms to further research.

After the initial keyword analysis has been completed, there are five components to the SEO strategy.
  • Web Site Analysis and Critique - Determine where your existing pages currently rank according to the top search engines. Compare your pages content, format, and keyword frequency and prominence to the top-ranking pages.
  • Web Page Development and Testing - Based on recommendations, each page is modified to meet search engine criteria. Each page is tested numerous times to assure accuracy of modifications.
  • Web Page Re-launch - All pages are re-submitted to the search engines either automatically, or by hand, depending on each of the search engines standards.
  • Verification - Each submission is monitored until it has been accepted (spidered) and achieves improved ranking.
  • Ongoing Tracking, Reporting, and Review - Each page is tracked for search results page position relative to competitor positions. Monthly reporting and review on all page positions, traffic, and end-results (newsletter subscription, sales, etc.). Optional – Immediate notification of page ranking change.
  • Costs involved with SEO are based on the number of keywords to be researched and how many pages are analyzed, critiqued, modified, submitted, and tracked. No two optimization projects are identical. Consequently, a thorough analysis should be conducted at the outset in order to develop an optimization strategy customized to your specific needs, goals, and budget.
